Premier League - Foreign Players

At the beginning of the Premier League in 1992-93, just 11 players were foreign. In 2000-01, the number of foreign players participating in the Premier League was 36 per cent. In the 2004-05 season the figure had increased to 45 per cent. On 14 February 2005, Arsenal were the first to name a completely foreign 16 man squad for a match. Alan Shearer became the first British player to command a transfer fee of more than £3 million. The record rose progressively in the Premier League's first few seasons, until Alan Shearer made a world record breaking £15 million move to Newcastle United in 1996.

This stood as a British record for four years until it was eclipsed by the £18 million Leeds paid West Ham for Rio Ferdinand. Manchester United subsequently broke the record three times by signing Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron and Rio Ferdinand. In May 2006, Chelsea broke the record reported as being around £30 million. On 1 September 2008, Manchester City's transfer of Robinho from Real Madrid broke the record for £32.5 million. Manchester United accepted an £80 million bid from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

Premier League - History

Premier League is the world's most watched league and attracting the top players from all over the world. The birth of the Premier League followed on from a very poor 1980s in English football and the events that succeeded it. Stadiums and facilities were in very poor condition. Premier League was born in February 1992 and started its first season on 15th August 1992. The first season of Premier League was played with a total of 22 teams contesting it. Manchester United lifted the cup and became the champions. Ever since, Manchester United have been on a winning streak and have 11 titles in their bag out of a possible 18. On the 20th February 1992 the first division clubs resigned from the Football League and three months later the Premier League was established as a limited company. In 1992 there were just 11 non British or Irish footballers in the Premier League, by 2007 this had increased to over 250. The first ever Premier League goal was scored by Brian Deane of Sheffield United in a 2-1 win against Manchester United.

The Premier League was initially composed of 22 clubs but it was always the aim to reduce that number to 20 to support development and excellence at club and international level. This was achieved at the end of the 1994-95 season when four clubs were relegated and just two promoted. The first Premier League season in 1992-93 kicked off to a backdrop of rocketing transfer fees and record deals. England striker Alan Shearer joined ambitious Blackburn Rovers from Southampton for a British record £3.5million in July and went on to score 16 goals in 21 league games. Sheringham cost £2million and justified the price tag by finishing as the league's top scorer with 22 goals. The signing of Eric Cantona for a cut price £1.2million from Leeds United in November was a major catalyst for the Red Devils' title success. Aston Villa ended the 42 match season in second place, ten points behind Manchester United. Norwich City, who recovered from an early 7-1 thrashing at Blackburn Rovers, gained the remaining UEFA Cup place by finishing third.

The league officially changed its name to “Premier League” in 2007. Premier League is the most lucrative football league with combined revenues rising up to a staggering $3.15 billion in 2007-08. Currently the television rights are held by Sky TV and Setanta till the end of 2010 season. They have paid an incredible 1.7billion pounds.
